Tropic Thunder is an oddity; a comedy wherein I'm impressed by all the clever setups and commentary on 2000's Hollywood but never truly laughed at any of the lowbrow verbal humor. The intro trailers are still some of my favorite modern comedy bits, and the Ben Stiller masterpiece is so quotable. Tropic Thunder features Tom Cruise like we've never seen him before. From the spoof adverts and film trailers at the start of this film you know what you're letting yourself in for and the film continues in much the same vein. One of my favorite Robert Downey Jr performances, and Tom Cruise shows out. Nearly a decade later, the movie industry is more franchise-hungry than ever, but we still haven't seen Tropic Thunder 2—and here's why. On location in southeast Vietnam, they are the stars of "Tropic Thunder", based on Vietnam war veteran 'Four Leaf' Tayback's memoirs of his rescue during the war, that rescue which was considered a near suicide mission for the assigned army force and resulted in him losing both hands. :)
